Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are the perfect complement to solar energy, which is one of the most predictable and cost-efficient renewable energy sources available. By storing excess energy, BESS makes it possible to use solar power throughout the day and helps optimise grid infrastructure. This combination increases the flexibility and efficiency of both the electricity market and energy systems—an essential step towards the increased electrification of society.

Increasing Flexibility and Stability

BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) help manage and distribute energy throughout the day, also when the sun isn’t shining. The potential of the sun is enormous when it comes to producing energy, but solar energy is not always produced when the energy demand is at its highest. Combining BESS and solar energy production is an ideal way to match power production and demand. BESS supports the electricity grid by making electricity available when the grid operators need it and improve its flexibility and stability in two key ways.

Firstly, BESS stores excess solar energy during the day and releases it during periods with low supply and high demand. This allows solar energy to be used even when the sun isn’t shining.

Secondly, during the day, while solar PV is generating electricity, BESS interacts with the electricity market to help stabilize the system and meet specific needs. Batteries support the electricity grid by absorbing surplus energy and releasing it when demand increases. This can prevent the grid overloading and ensure a more stable energy supply. 

Integrating BESS with solar energy is an ideal renewable energy solution that benefits society, the energy market, grid operators and energy producers, while contributing to the foundation of a sustainable energy system that meets the growing demand for renewable energy.

    BESS allows for more renewable energy in the energy system throughout the day. The storage of excess solar energy ensures that more renewable energy is available when there is demand, even after sunset.     BESS helps balance the grid by absorbing surplus energy when generation exceeds demand and releasing stored energy when demand increases.     By co-locating BESS with solar PV, we can make better use of existing grid connections, boosting the efficiency of our energy production. Both Solar PV and BESS are mature, cost-effective technologies that can be deployed quickly, helping Europe meet its 2030 renewable energy and climate targets. BESS and solar energy also contribute to energy independence by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthening energy security and stability.

Projects in pipeline

Nordic Solar has 25 battery storage projects in development, with a total storage capacity of just under 1 GWh. BESS will be integrated into both existing and the future project development over the next few years to prepare for the market’s shift toward increased electrification and the integration of more renewable energy.

We expect that the market for battery storage will grow rapidly in the coming years. Batteries will be a strong addition to our business, adding a new dimension to the roll out of more renewable energy. As an energy producer, we can actively contribute to improving the flexibility and stability of the energy system, which we consider a step in the right direction towards the transition and increased electrification of society.
